What to Expect The First Year
This was a book that I used as my Baby Care Bible when my daughter was born. The book is a comprehensive, easy-to-understand and incredibly useful guide for every new parent. The book is divided into 2 parts. In Part 1, the first 3 chapters cover getting ready for baby – choosing a doctor, deciding on breastfeeding or bottle and buying for baby. Then, it has a newborn baby care section in Chapter 4. Chapters 5 to 16 are monthly chapters for each month of baby’s age, from the first month till month 12. These detailed chapters covers the monthly milestones, answers questions that arise in nearly all our minds about baby’s development and behavior patterns.
Part 2 of the book has detailed sections on taking care of a sick baby, playing with and traveling with baby, weaning and feeding problems and issues as well as a host of other useful and much-needed information. It also has sections for Special Needs babies and adopted babies. Part 3 of the book covers Family and gives good advice on dealing with becoming a mom and a dad and a sibling.
What to Expect The Toddler Years
By the same authors, What to Expect the Toddler Years covers the all-important 2nd and 3rd years of a child’s life. The book is chockfull of helpful ideas, useful advice, reassuring guidance and like its predecessor, is easy-to-follow and immensely useful. The book has 900-odd pages of milestones, development, pediatric checkups and general parental concerns. Not just that, Part 2 of the book covers health, safety, nutrition, toilet training as well as caring for children with special needs. In addition, Part 3 of the book is filled with useful tips and ideas on dealing with important issues from a toddler’s perspective. Divorce, siblings, working parents, adoption, child care are some of the issues addressed in this section. Part 4 is filled with suggestions for activities, recipes, home remedies and growth and development charts. Parents of toddlers, the world over, would benefit from this well-written and authoritative parenting book.
Secrets of The Baby Whisperer
While Tracy Hogg a.k.a The Baby Whisperer is no more, her legacy lives on in the form of The Baby Whisperer books. I used a lot of Tracy’s advice for new parents in the initial days of my baby’s birth for sleep, feeding and play. Her E.A.S.Y. routine was, in fact, responsible for me being able to start working from home soon after the birth of my daughter. While some may disagree with her ideas and principles, I feel that The Baby Whisperer is a useful resource for any new parent who wishes to establishes a flexible yet structured routine for their baby and their home right from the beginning.
Dr. Spock’s Baby and Child Care: 8th Edition
Dr. Spock, it goes without saying, is treated as the Bible of Baby Care Books. These days, the editions available have Dr. Robert Needleman expertise adding to the wealth of parenting advice and information that Dr. Spock provides. Personally, while I would go to What to Expect for the personalized aspect, for medical issues and other important details, I would often, cross-check information with Dr. Spock. The book again is divided into sections and there are detailed sections that cover every important issue under the sun right from birth to the adolescent years. So, if you buy this book, you’re pretty much covered as far as dealing with the kids is concerned.
